Meet Dr. Malhotra

Dr. Malhotra

Specialty

Dr. Malhotra is quadruple board-certified in electrodiagnostic medicine, neuromuscular medicine, brain injury medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) — also known as "physiatry." He focuses on restoring function through cutting-edge, evidence-based care for patients dealing with musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions.

Clinical Approach

"When I meet a new patient, I invest a good amount of time getting to know them, uncovering issues that may not initially seem relevant, and diving deep into their experiences with prior treatments. I then conduct a thorough examination so I can answer their questions about what's going on and what the next steps might be. I believe that an informed patient is an empowered patient — and above all, I prioritize making sure they truly understand their condition and how they can best help themselves, with the fewest procedures or medications possible."

By looking at each patient as a whole person, Dr. Malhotra evaluates the relationships between all of the body's moving parts — known as biomechanics — to identify the root cause of pain that is often difficult to diagnose. He then builds a treatment plan around non-surgical options, which prove effective for most patients. With a focus on patient education over procedures, he empowers patients to take an active role in their own recovery.

"I also take pride in coordinating my patients' care and staying in close communication with their other providers. This interdisciplinary approach takes more time — but it consistently leads to better outcomes."

Dr. Malhotra's clinical work is shaped not only by his academic training and years of practical experience, but also by time spent at the bedside of veterans, family, and friends. As a founding member of Fortera, his vision is to offer primary care physicians a true one-stop shop for musculoskeletal and neuromuscular needs — covering evaluation, diagnostic testing, and referrals to the right subspecialists — so that invasive procedures are reserved for only when they are truly necessary.

About Dr. Malhotra

Gautam Malhotra is a proud New Jersey native. A graduate of the Pingry School, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics through the Rutgers College general honors program and his MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers) New Jersey Medical School. He then devoted 17 years to the VA New Jersey Healthcare System, caring for veterans while building programs at the local, regional, and national level. During that time he served as Director of Polytrauma, liaison to the Amputee System of Care, Director of Strategic Development, and contributed to numerous committees and task forces, among them the national VA PM&R Field Advisory Board.

He served as past Chair of the AANEM PM&R Task Force and remains active on several committees. His academic contributions include textbook chapters, articles in peer-reviewed journals, and an invited monograph for the prestigious Muscle and Nerve Journal, where he also serves as a peer reviewer. He additionally reviews manuscripts for the PM&R Journal.

Castle Connolly Top Doctor

Dr. Malhotra has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, an honor determined entirely by peer nomination. Physicians are recognized based on their clinical expertise, procedural experience, and track record of strong patient outcomes — with no financial component involved. It is a distinction that reflects the confidence and respect of the broader medical community.

Interventional Pain Management

Minimally invasive, precision-guided procedures that target the source of your pain, reducing inflammation, interrupting pain signals, and restoring your ability to function with minimal downtime.

Regenerative Medicine

Cutting-edge therapies that harness your body's own healing power to accelerate recovery, reduce inflammation, and support long-term tissue repair, working with your biology, not against it.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Treating pain is only the beginning. Our rehabilitative care restores strength, mobility, and confidence, seamlessly integrated with your treatment plan when and where it's needed most.

OUR Approach

At Fortera Health, we take a multi-specialty approach to pain care because lasting results rarely come from a single treatment. Depending on your diagnosis and goals, your care plan may draw from one or more of three integrated disciplines, each designed to address your pain from a different angle.
