Lumbar spinal stenosis occurs when the space within the lower spinal canal becomes narrowed, placing pressure on the nerves. For some patients, this can cause pain, heaviness, numbness, or weakness in the legs while standing or walking, a condition known as neurogenic claudication. Symptoms often improve when sitting or leaning forward.
The MILD® procedure is a minimally invasive treatment designed for certain patients whose spinal stenosis is caused in part by thickening of a ligament within the spinal canal. By removing a small amount of this excess tissue, the procedure creates more space for the nerves and can help patients stand and walk more comfortably.

How Does MILD® Work?
Using live X-ray guidance (fluoroscopy), the physician accesses the treatment area through a very small opening in the back. Specialized instruments are used to remove small portions of the thickened ligament and, when necessary, a small amount of bone contributing to the narrowing.
Unlike traditional spine surgery, MILD® does not require an implant or general anesthesia and is designed to preserve the structural stability of the spine.
Who May Benefit?
MILD® may be considered for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis and neurogenic claudication whose symptoms continue despite treatments such as medication, physical therapy, or epidural steroid injections.
Not every type of spinal stenosis can be treated with this procedure. Your physician will review your symptoms, examination, and imaging to determine whether thickened ligament tissue is contributing to the narrowing and whether MILD® is an appropriate option.

What to Expect
MILD® is performed as an outpatient procedure using image guidance. Because the procedure is performed through a small opening and does not involve placement of an implant, it is considerably less invasive than traditional open decompression surgery.
Recovery varies by patient, and your physician will provide instructions for gradually returning to normal activities.
Creating More Space for Better Movement
For appropriately selected patients, reducing pressure within the spinal canal may help improve walking tolerance, mobility, and everyday function. MILD® can provide an option between more conservative treatments and traditional spine surgery for patients whose symptoms continue to interfere with daily life.
